   Since the beginning, how many “straight edgers” think that straight edge is a means of saying “I’m better than you, I’m more pure, …”?

   And look at your own forum: have you ever paid attention to the fact that many posters make extensive use of sexist, homophobic and “beat/kill emo kids”, “punks suck” and so on? Is there any difference to you between being racist or misogynistic?

   There’s a huge gap between stating that you’re straight edge and stating that you’re trying to “live a healthy life according to my personnal views”. The later implies only yourself, while the first means that you include yourself in a group, which has two meanings: first, it creates a clear distinction between “us” and “them”, a first step between making differences between people. Second, when the group grows, you have no control on how its members behave; then either you endorse their behavior, either you put a distance between them and yourself. The need to feel you’re in a group, wether it’s a drug dealers gang, a straight edge clique, a nazi-skin group, a cheerleader team or whatever is the same on a socialogical point of view: you need to feel you’re not alone. The rest is more or less (…) a matter of circonstances, very often more than true convictions or personnal tastes. A negation of individuals.

   And finally, where the hell have you ever found a clear definition of straight-edgism? Aren’t there as many definitions as there are people to think about one? So why define yourself with a word that has no clear meaning? Why not define yourself according to who you really are, as an individual?

   Dear xGRRRRx, thanks for your great comment. I must admit that you got some good points there even I don’t agree with all of them. Anyway, I’m gonna keep it short. The real point of this post was to show something that’s slowly getting into the mainstream media: straight edge nazis. My idea was to explain things so that the media don’t mix up things (like they often do) and make people believe that sxe kids are only a bunch of nazi cunts. If nazis want to live a poisonfree life, that’s cool for them, but don’t call yourselves SXE! Get yourself a proper name…I don’t know “NaziEdge” or something…

   The “definition” I gave is obviously personal. There is indeed no universal way to define sxe, except, maybe, the fact that it’s all about living a positive life without drinking alcohol, having drugs, smoking or having casual sex. Anyway, I guess other people might see it in another way, and that’s cool. Straight edge is something you live and define how you want (or need) it. Like Set It Straight sings: “I am straight edge for my own fucking self and no one else”, it’s something personal (I’ll NEVER push my beliefs onto others, hardline is just another form of extremism). And about labelling myself sxe, well, I believe it’s a way for my to show (and feel) that I’m part of a positive community. It’s also a way to say “Hey, I took a big step in my life and chose to live a drug free life and stop drinking alcohol”. But being part of the straight edge community doesn’t (and shouldn’t) make you exclude people that aren’t: you’re sxe, that’s cool, you’re not? That’s cool too, live your life how you want it!

   About our forum, to be honest, we try to keep it as clean as possible (wich is not always easy with hundreds of people posting). You’re right about the fact that some people use homophobic or “anti-emo-kid-beatdown-stuff” shit, but I think (and hope) it’s more about joking than being serious about it. If somebody seriously post hate messages he’ll be warned and probably quickly banned from the messageboard. We have boys, girls, straight’s, bi’s, gays, Belgians, Dutchs, Germans, Italians, emo kids, christians, metalheads, punkrockers and a lot of other kind of people, and everybody seems to get along fine for more than 8 years now. So, if you ever see any hate message (it’s no easy for us to monitor the thousands of messages posted every month) feel free to mail me and I’ll take action.

   Anyway, I hope I made my points more clear, and again thanks for your great comment.

   Well first of all, I know the difference between white pride and nazism. The guys on the pictures above this article seem to have the Stormfront white pride crosses (because we all know that it’s not just the celtic crosses), no!? So you have white pride guys AND nazis (or whatever German or Russian nationalists) stealing the straight edge principles.

   And The Let’s Fight White Pride / Good Night White Pride first goals were to exclude white pride, nazis and any other fascists people from hardcore shows. You can be proud of who you are and where you come from without being a racist… And by the way, I’m against any form of racism: white power or black power is exactly the same when it comes to exclude people that are different than you. And excluding people because of their color skin, religion views, sexual choices is just fucking WRONG! But hey, you can have the life you want and make the choices you want, but don’t steal and use the term “straight edge” because it’s not and never will be about fascism.

   By the way, if I were the fascist that you seem to say I’m, I wouldn’t publish your comment because I don’t agree with your (lame) views, but I honestly think that everybody deserves to have their own views and choices. That’s what I takes to live in a “free” and “democratic” society. So, goodnight bad guy.

   Well white pride is almost the fear to see the “white race” disappear…which is for me clearly some nazi/white power views…and there are no needs to feel proud of being white/black/brown/yellow or whatever…as Greg already said, straight edge is a personnal thing, it’s not a movement just a way of life, just a choice which you can be proud of without hurting people who are not like you.

   And as I’ve seen in so many documentaries, this is definitely not the case with your “white pride” ‘nough said!

    I’m not going to debate about straight-edge because I am not edge and I can’t really know the ideals well, but what I know is that there is a huge difference between being proud of where you come from and being facist! And the expression “good night white-pride” doesn’t refer to the fact of being proud of being white, but to the fact of thinking white people are superior! And that counts for black, yellow, inuits or llamas too!!
    When I walk down the streets of Brussels, I sometimes get very proud of where I come from just by looking at “artefacts” of our culture like old french-fries stalls or surrealistic architectures and stuff like that….but that doesn’t mean I think Belgian culture to be superior to any other! BUT…there are stupid people everywhere and that’s the only but sad truth! Everywhere, there will always be people that will have their own point of view (which is their freedom), and sometimes these points of view unfortunately disrespect everything that is different…and that’s sad!
    About our forum, i’ll confirm François’s statement: us belgians have a very surrealistic and dark cultural heritage…we’re not scared of laughing at ourselves because we know we don’t actually mean what we say….and same, we’re not scared of making homophobic, sexists or whatever bad jokes because we KNOW we don’t think that! A REAL facist wouldn’t joke about foreign people because it’s a serious subject for him…i’ve seen straight-edgers making jokes about partying with cocaïne and hookers! You think it would make sense if they were serious? I think not!
    It’s all just a question of second degree…

    While I am not straight edge, I have a few long time friends who are so to speak. While they dont use the term, they live by the ideals. I have never once given them any grief for it. In fact, I think it’s awesome. They come out on a saturday night sometimes and I have a DD to get home and we all have a good time playing pool or rockin out to some lame cover band. (I dont go to HC shows anymore….turned into a bit of a fashion show/who can hit the most people who dont want to be hit type of deal and I got sick of it…I stick to the lazy metal head shows).

    However, there are plenty of straight edge kids who look down upon those that are not. WHen someone gives them crap they always reply with “we didn’t do anything to them to deserve being picked on”. Bullshit! When you turn a lifestyle that was intended to be a PERSONAL choice into a group movement with mob mentality, you are asking for criticism. It’s the same with any group.

    I am a libertarian. People within my political “movement” are labeled moonies, or fringe, conspiracy theorists, batshit insane etc., etc., ad infinitum ad nauseum. All we want is for people to be allowed to live their lives with total liberty, limited government and follow a live and let live creed. In other words, do whatever it is you want as long as you do not infringe upon my or anyone else’s rights.

    THe problem I have with group mentality straight edge is they do just that. They CHOSE to be how they want to be, banded together and in some cases decided to go enforce their viewpoint upon others.

    I dont party all the time, I dont do drugs. I drink a few beers from time to time, I do smoke but I respect those who dont like it around them and GASP! I am not a bad guy! I have a 2 year old son, I dont smoke around him, don’t drink around him or anything. I will be the first person to lend a hand to someone when it is needed. Straight edge, not straight edge, gay, bi, straight, purple….anyone! (except for mexicans……just kidding).

    It’s time for everyone to drop the us against them mentality. I am not saying we have to live in a Utopian world….that is never going to happen. We just have to respect each other’s individual liberty and if we have to band together, focus that negative energy on those who want to take your liberty away….namely government.

    So, if you are straight edge and you see me, respect me. Not only have I been around your scene since some of you were still in 3rd grade or even before that, but if you are innocent…if you have been busted on for who you are without having given someone a reason… I’ll be the first person to back you up!

    I certainly agree that a tweeker high on meth isn’t someone who’s very fun to be moshing with, but I also heard a story from my home town a few years back that talked of a young black man with dreads who was having lunch with his brother… when they walked away from the restaurant a couple straight edgers who were eating there as well followed them and killed the guy with dreads because, as they said, he looked like someone who smokes weed. How is that tolerance??? I had a friend go to a metal show where he was beat up by a group of straight edgers while moshing… So long for the “I’ll pick you up if you fall on me.
    We’ll mosh in the pit of equality” mentality. While this may not be the ideals that all straight edgers live by, this what a majority of straight edgers are telling the communities where they live. I don’t think that straight edge has anything to do with racism, or white pride, or anything like that… but they definitely give an image of violence and hatred to people who don’t completely agree with what they think is right. Last I checked that’s the definition of bigotry and intolerance. So before you bitch about what the public thinks about your group, look at what a majority of your group is doing. If you still choose to be a part of that – even if you choose the part that “is about being a better person, being open minded, having respect for yourself and others, doing positive things…and is totally against any form of intolerance or hate!” – then accept what the public may view the rest of the group as, and know that you aren’t part of that.

    Well Jamin I think what you say isn’t totally true, even if it has some interesting points. Of course there are some stupid intolerant straight edgers that will beat or even kill people because they smoke or drink, but thats the the majority. That’s what we call the hardliners. BUT maybe I’m wrong because my point of view is from an European standpoint. Hardcore and sxe aren’t the same over here as in the US. They are not as big in the States, there is also less violence, etc. My point is: I probably didnt choose the most neutral lyrics (you’re totally right there) but still, I don’t think the majority of straight edgers are stupid violent people that hate non-straight edgers.

    But thanks for your comment because it shows a big problem that exists, particularly in the US, where straight edgers can be very intolerant people. As you said, some guys will make trouble for stupid reasons and that has nothing to do with sxe! Stupid people are stupid people, straight edge or not!

Last i checked groups of any type no matter what they set out to achieve only casue more fighting in the long run. My opinion is live life as it comes, follow your own common sense (its in there somewhere) and accept your mistakes.
