Interview: Glass Casket
Mar. 29th, 2007 | In: Hardcore | Tags: EN | No Comments »Third episode of our “old hardcore interviews”. This one is Yann’s work again. Interview with Blake on January 21th, 2005.

Blake from Glass Casket has kindly answered our questions. Unfortunately it has been done by emails and i wish i could have asked him some more details about his answers, but here it is, the Glass casket interview. Be sure to check www.glasscasket.com, this band seriously rocks.
» Hey guys, i can’t stop listening to your music since the release of “We are gathered here today”. Can you tell us exactly who you are and your musical background?
Well thanks for the kind words. It’s always good to hear some positive feedback. Anyways, my name is Blake Richardson. I play the drums. My background isn’t really that extensive to be honest. I’ve been into metal pretty much when I first got into musicand I have been in a few bands here and there. This is the first serious band I’ve been in.
» Your cd will be released in Europe by Bastardized Records (readers can download some mp3s from www.glasscasket.com ), how does it feel to be heard on the other side of the earth? Are you planning to tour the old continent in 2005?
Yeah it’s really cool that it’s getting released in Europe. Hopefully people will dig the album over there. It’s cool to have our music heard beyond our country. We get responses from people all over the world. It’s amazing. Maybe one day we will be able to make it over to Europe. Will still need to tour our own country for a little while first. We just need to cover our grounds and roots first I guess.
» Your music is a great mix of different styles of extreme metal and hardcore, can you tell us what are your influences in general? There are so many great bands in North Carolina do you have any favourite ones?
Yeah we like to blend a little grind, death, and black metal here and there. We are influenced by so many bands that it would take 50 pages to list all of them. I’d say some of the majors are Decapitated, Pantera, and Dream Theater. Those bands are constantly played in our CD player on tour. North Carolina has an awesome scene. It’s great because we have such a wide array of music here. Codeseven and Beloved have been some of the bigger soft bands that have come out of NC. Undying and Between the Buried Me are also some bigger metal bands. I don’t really have a favorite among those really.
» Why have you changed your name from “Gadrel” to “Glass Casket”?
That’s a long story really. Bassically Gadrel was a name that was something that we did not feel like being associated with anymore. It didn’t reflect the style of music and personalities we have. Bassically we came up with Glass Casket because it is pretty much a reference to snow white. It’s really corny, but she was a representation of beauty in the story but was confined to a casket, which is something associated with death and destruction. It pretty much represents our musical tastes from both sides of the spectrum.
» At first when I heard a mp3 from your band I thought you were some long haired metalheads hahaha. Is fashion an important thing for you? What do you think about all the gossips on “fashioncore” and all the make up /dressing code attitude?
I personally am not a fan of all that fashioncore crap. If you are into wearing girls jeans and wearing mascara that’s fine..I’m not going to put you down…but that stuff is just not for me and is not what this band is about. I think it’s getting a little out of control honestly. I mean, I’ll go to a show and can’t tell if half the people there are dudes or chicks. Pretty crazy. But whatever.
» I think there is only one part with clear vocals on your cd (in the song “in between the sheets”) is there any reason why? I really like this part of the song but isn’t it weird in the middle of this metal mayhem?
That was something we just threw in there for the girls and kiddies. Haha. Not really, that was just a moment in a song that represents our broad range of influences. Yeah, we DO listen to softer music every now and then. So we figured we’d show what we could do. We love melodic stuff so we thought it was great to put that part in there.
» Why do you have entitled your cd “We are gathered here today”?
Unfortunely, Adam, our singer, lost his sister about 3 months before we recorded the album. It was a shocking moment in all our lives. It showed us that life is just too important and too short to waste it being depressed about stupid things. So we figured we’d dedicate the album to her. We are gathered here today is typically a saying that a minister or priest will say before a funeral.
» Are you trying to spread any specific message through Glass casket?
Just to stay positive and don’t get down about petty stuff. Like I said before. Life is just too important. We are pretty much like a hardcore band in that sense I guess. Other than that, we just want to rock out and make some good music.
» What is your opinion on the re-election of Bush?
Haha. That’s a tough question to answer. Well, not all of my bandmates may agree with me, but I voted for Bush. I think he did an amazing job with our economy after 911. We could have easily fallen into an economic depression. I guess a lot of that has to do with Alan Greenspan as well, being the chief executive officer of the federal reserve. Anyways, I’m getting off topic. Yeah a lot of people will disagree with what I think of but its cool. I have the freedom to believe in what I wish. That’s why I love our country.
» Even here the us presidential election was the main subject on tvnews during quite a long time, isn’t that weird ? I mean it’s cool to know the results but covering the whole thing gives a taste of “who’s gonna be the next master of the world”?
Yeah it’s kind of interesting to see it becoming such a world wide event. I mean, America is the world power so it does make sense that the world is concerned of who will be president of America. I don’t know. I am actually kind of glad that the election is over. Because being a Bush supporter is not an easy bid. So I got a lot of critisizm for that.
» Choose between “All shall perish” and “Hatebreed” and please tell us why?
I haven’t heard All Shall Perish so I guess that wouldn’t be a fair question. But Hatebreed does rule. Jamey has some sick vocals and seems like a really cool dude. I think they are one of the heaviest bands live too.
» Do you know some bands from Europe, and if so, which one is your favourite and why?
I honestly don’t know too many bands from Europe. I’ve met some of the guys in Children of Bodom and Caliban and they all seemed really cool. I think some of my favorite bands from Europe would have to be Decapitated and Arch Enemy. Those bands just rule. So, so heavy. Euro metal has definitely been an influence on us as a band as well. We love the melodic heavy stuff like In Flames. That stuff just kicks ass.
» Are you planning to record something soon?
I think we are going to go back into the studio with Jamie King this summer hopefully. We still need to write some more material. It’s kinda hard being in school and all..and Dustie being in BTBAM. But we’ll work it out.
» Any last words for yurop?
Leave Bush alone…haha.
